3 fiskateers: Spring fever

3fisk.jpg I sent 6 fisk-a-teers the same card of Heidi Grace ribbons, and some multi-color rain dots and asked them to let their spring fever take over and create a scrapbook layout. Here are the results…

1dawn.jpg1dawn2a.jpg1dawn2.jpg Dawn #2376 -  I used double-sided paper but you can also glue two separate pieces of paper back to back.  Cut your double-sided paper with pattern on top using marked lines.  Hole punch 4 corners and middle of square.  Fold each corner (w/holes) to the middle and use brad or eyelet to hold the corners in place.

This was a great project for me because I didn’t realize how many challenges would be involved.  I’ve been paper crafting the last year or so - particularly altered albums for friends and family gifts - that I can’t even remember when I did a two page scrapbook layout.  Then with the theme being spring, I didn’t have any current photos to use because spring hasn’t sprung in central Ohio yet.  So, I challenged myself to scrapbook photos from my pre-scrapbook years and before my digital camera.  I found the most adorable photos of my kids from 10 years ago!   Also, I took a class from Anna Griffin a few years ago that used pinwheels and wanted to incorporate them in this layout.  This was such a fun project!
Pinwheel Pattern - Large Pinwheel is 4×4 square, Small Pinwheel is 2×2 square
1kim.JPG Kim #2700 - I knew the moment I saw the ribbon, I was going to use it as my flower stems & leaves.  Especially love the rick rack! Sometimes when you see patterned paper that has a large design, it may look too busy behind photos.  I like to cut out the patterns and use them for embellishments! (Cloud 9 paper)

1mick.jpg1mickdetail.jpg Mickel #2590 - This is Daphne, our newest member of the family.  She is a purebred American Cocker Spaniel that is considered a mis-marked black and tan.  We just call her unique!  I’ve always wanted to be able to dress up a little girl but since I have a son and won’t be having any more children I have to live through dressing up poor Daphne!  So this is her first pretty pink shirt and her first “official” photo shoot!

I used inking, Fiskars “Whimsy” embossing template, Cloud 9 Rain Dots in Multi Floral, Heidi Grace Moonlight Meadow ribbons and Heidi Grace Bouquet Trim PP from 2006.  I used the George cartridge from my Cricut to cut out her name and the flower at the top.  I embossed the little pieces of paper under the smaller pictures and then inked them so the embossing would stand out. The journaling is on the tag with ribbon on it under the big picture.  The journaling says:
Daphne
Born on: 12-11-2007
Came to us: 2-14-2008
Daphne came from Thundering Paws Kennel in Missouri.  She’s a black and tan cocker spaniel.

1tamara.jpg Tamara # 437-  The ribbons were spring themed and they lead me to think about Easter just gone and I had the perfect photos to go with it!  I wore bright purple fluffy bunny ears to work before Easter and to my Mum’s for dinner on Easter Sunday and I knew the colours would match in perfectly.  Another part of Easter for me is sugar eggs from my Grandmother, she makes them herself and she is getting older, so each year I am overjoyed to receive them and took some photos of them before devouring them.  She does the decoration on them herself as well.  The littlest egg in the photo was a special one just for me this year, decorated by my goddaughter.  A photo of our eggs was a perfect addition to my layout for a Spring Themed Easter!

This layout itself is 98% Fiskars products, the only things that aren’t are the cardstock, adhesive and pens.  For this layout I used Heidi Grace Urban Acres Blvd patterned paper and Chipboard Punch outs, Heidi Grace letter stickers, Heidi Grace stamps (the word happy and the stamps on the tag), a Heidi Grace Die Cut tag from the Orchard range and of course my ribbons and raindots. For tools I used my Fiskars Purple Trimmer, Stamp Press, Softouch Micro-Tip Scissors, Ultra ShapeXpress, Tag Shape Template, 1” circle squeeze punch, cutting mat and my 15” Fiskars ruler!

The scalloped border on the layout was created using my 1” circle squeeze punch.  You punch out enough circles to match your border length (for 1” circles I used 11 on each side as it was an 11” paper square).  Arrange and attach the circles to the back of where you want the border to appear (in this case my patterned paper), you turn over the item you’ve attached it to and there is your scalloped border!  To accent my border I placed raindots in the centre of the scallop. I must admit that raindots are some of my favourite scrapping products to use.  I use them on most of my cards and layouts.  They are perfect for accenting parts of embellishments or designs or using them as a feature on their own, being fairly clear they don’t detract from what else is on the page, only accent it..  On my layout I have used them as accents in the centres of my stamped flowers, on the chipboard photo corner, on the corners of the black matted photo as well as the centre of the scallops.  In the past I have used them as the “dot” on the letter I, centres for flowers, as photo corners, accents for patterned paper designs, centres of layered circles, to create a circle or swirl design or to act as a ‘divider’ in a line on a page.
1valerie.jpg Valerie #1481 - For this project I decided I wanted to scrap a page to honor my Mom.  Before I taped the project down I laid it out so I could decide where the title fit best.  I used the Fiskars Leave it to Weaver punch for 3/8 inch ribbon.  My ribbon was a little wider but it still worked awsome.  I stamped the swirl chipboard with the  gluepad and then sprinkled ultra fine glitter. To add interest I used a border punch on the corners of the pictures and the frames.  I wrote in my moms name so future generations would know who was in the picture.

1ppup.JPG Veronica #1135- It’s all the better when rain dots are involved and I’m super psyched about the mixed color dots that went into this layout. I like the way some are more vibrant shades, some muted–traits that brought to mind my dearly insane kitty, Weezee. She’s decidedly two cats trapped in a single body. On one side, she’s feisty at best, snotty at worst, picking on any one of my poor dogs and cats who dare enter her view or slipping out the back door in a downpour just to have the satisfaction of making one of us run out after her only to return with an angry cat and soaking wet socks. The other side is a cute, ever curious eternal kitten. My sweet little girl who begs to be loved, brings you her favorite “baby” (a crocheted cat toy we bought ages ago when she was, actually, a kitten), pacing before you emitting muffled meows just hoping you’ll tell her how proud you are that she’s such a good “mommy” to her “baby”, nevermind that she was spayed before we even adopted her.

The rick rack on either side of the blue ribbons suggest the edges of a page torn in half. I chose a Cloud Nine paper I felt reflected the silliness of the photos and of springtime. I love the kinetic look of the pictures as Weezee checked out the camera, attacking the wrist strap or staring into this strange eye. The rain dots are fun as the centers of all the little flowers, but they also evoke the look of a hundred little camera lenses everywhere.

Lately I have been having fun playing with beads on my scrapbook pages. In this case, I made a spring green frame around each photo using a mixture of seed beads and microbeads. I think they look impressive despite how easy the technique actually is. First, you will need some type of glitter tray. Trust me, if you don’t you will never catch all the microscopic beads that bounce off the table and roll willy nilly all over the floor. Sweeping them just makes them careen wildly…it’s just worth getting a tray. Many brands even have funnels to pour the excess back into the tube the beads came in. Much more convenient. Sticky Strip or one of the other brands of super sticky red-edged double sided tape makes it so easy to adhere the beads. Carefully stick a strip of tape around each edge of the photo and remove the red backing. Place the photo face up inside the glitter tray, then pour a mixture of microbeads and seed beads into the center of the photo. Tilt the tray to coat the tape with beads. Microbeads will stick well on their own, but the larger beads may need to be pressed down. If there are any bare spots, press more beads into the spot manually. In the case of the photo on the right, the blank spots were created after the fact by a set of claws. I considered repairing it, but then I decided it was just too appropriate to cover.

How great are all these ideas? Want some rain dots to call your own? ** SORRY! RAK IS NOW CLOSED **
