3 fiskateers: rub-ons

rub-ons. If you’ve been down any paper crafting isle or been inside any scrapbook store in the last 3 years you’ve seen them. Alphabets, shapes, images, borders, frames, words… you name it, they make rub-ons for it. It is important to note that not all rub-ons are equal- some are easier to use than others. If you’re just now venturing into the world of rubs here are some suggestions- use a stylus or ball point pen to apply them, go slow and steady, lift SLOW to make sure you’ve achieved transfer, and always cut apart before using. Now, I don’t follow my own rule (the last one!)… but I’ve got thousands of projects under my belt and if I make an oops I know I can just pull out the goo-be-gone (aka undu) and the rub-on will be history. Of course being such a fan of rub-ons I can find myself in a rut from time to time… and that’s why I’ve asked these fiskateers to share some inspiring projects…
Erin 307# - home decor project–family canvas- I used three 4×12 canvas pieces and hinges to put this together. First, I painted each canvas, and then started playing with photo locations. Next, I got out the matching Heidi Grace papers to go along with the rubons and then I just started playing around. What I found I LOVED was how easy these rubons would go onto any surface. Whether it be the paint, the papers, the photos or the embellies themselves, they worked and were so easy! I also liked how well I could write onto the rubons, and how adding just some stickles made it shine!
all you need is love- these photos of my baby with my grandma who recently passed were so important for me to get scrapped. While I wouldn’t have normally paired these photos with Heidi’s “heidi’s hearts” line, but they blended really well with the rubons so I tried it. I used a lot of Heidi’s chipboard pieces from random lines I had and I love how the rubons worked so well on them.
Maya #351 - Rub-on are very fun and versatile product! You can use them… everywhere! For my first project I decorated the small clay pots. I painted them first with acrylic paint, than applied the Love Icons HG rub-ons and covered everything with two coats of Krylon glossy spray.
The HG letters rub-ons were perfect for decorating the binder spine. To make a heart I punched out the heart from the rub-ons sheet using my Funky Heart squeeze punch, traced the outline of the heart and than applied the rub-on. I used the same letters rub-ons to decorate 2 small clipboards. I will use them for the morning check-list for my girls.
The beautiful colors of the Cloud 9 Hannah’s Story rub-ons reminded me out trip to north WI last fall. Floating picture frame from Michael’s, one photo and few rub-ons - that’s all what it took to preserve the wonderful memories I have from this trip. I love the look of rub-ons on transparent surface - picture frame, so popular now acrylic albums, ghost shapes and letters - it’s all perfect for rub-ons!
For my layout I picked 4 pictures from my recent trip to Israel. I just love to discover the tiny piece of art in my latte! The journaling is on the tag behind one of the photos.
Robyn # 323 - A layout I could not help but do for this assignment I had a photo of Heidi Grace and I taken back in November 2005 when Heidi was here in Australia teaching in Sydney. I had a great time in her classes and loved her products then. The rubons are fantastic and I thought would work well with the other Heidi Papers I had in my stash….love that they are brown and not black too! Don’t be scared to use rub ons on your photos and overlap them even on your photo mount as I have.

It’s my husband who does the shopping each week, and I will often come home and say “Did you get ???” and its at this point he says “If its not on the LIST”… So I started the project with a 4 x 4 canvas, brushed some twinkling H20’s on it, to give it a little colour, got my trusty Fiskars Drill and drilled two holes for the rings, added the rub-ons, and then placed small prima flowers round the edge. Then I took a piece of chipboard, cut it to size and with my Fiskars hand punch I punched holes, covered it with some Heidi Grace paper and added the paper to it.Voila………THE LIST
TIP: When I am ready to use some rubons I take the cardboard sheet from the pack of rub ons, leaving the rubons in the plastic wrapping they came in and then I cut around the rubons. Then I take my trusty stapler and staple the plastic, the backing sheet and rubons together. This way I can place them on the page and see if they work. If I don’t use some of my rubons they will stay in good condition as they are still kinda sealed in the wrapping.
Want some rub-ons of your own? Leave a comment here and I’ll pick a lucky winner this (Friday) evening…

October 19th, 2007 at 8:27 amOnce again I am totally amazed by the talented ladies we have on our board. The 3 Fiskateers projects are all so unique & inspiring. I love the use of rub ons & must admit (hang head in shame) that I don’t use them very often. I have a few in my stash but that old ‘out of sight’ saying seems to be the rule here. I’m going to have to find a way to put them in SIGHT and start using them more. Thanks for showing us some creative ways to use them.

October 19th, 2007 at 4:52 pmI’m definitely going to be taking Robyn’s list idea and making one for my house! I’ve been looking for something like that so I can stop hounding my kids to write down whatever they ate or drank the last of so I know we need it on grocery day instead of telling me at the time and me forgetting by the time I go shopping.

October 24th, 2007 at 11:10 amAnother tip for the rubon lovers here..
I staple my rub ons to their backing sheet as soon as I open the package. I’ve noticed that they stay nicer that way. So don’t wait until you’ve used one before stapling, do it right as soon as you take them out of their packaging.
Another tip with rub-ons is that they don’t really keep well for extended lengths of time, so if you bought it, use it! You can always get new and different ones if you use this one up, and then you can look at them on a page and enjoy them there!
