Sacrifice ~ the surrender or destruction of something valued for the sake of something having a higher or more pressing claim; to surrender, give up, permit injury to, or destroy for the sake of something else; to offer up.
I’ve taken a couple of days off and just relaxed a bit. Mother’s Day was nice and I hope that all of you mothers had a blessed and restful day. I sure did and was spoiled by my family.
I wanted to share with you an experience that surrounds sacrifice. I have always been patriotic and ‘proud to be an American’. My father and grandfather served in the military. I married a Marine and was a military wife for about a year. I didn’t know if he was going to make it back from Desert Storm for the wedding we had planned a year prior but he did. We had a military wedding with the Marine Corp color guard, played “God Bless the USA” at our wedding, Rodney was married in his dress blues and our colors even reflected a patriotic theme . . . it’s a part of who I am and who he is. I’m proud to be an American.
I was asked by Fiskars and Brains on Fire to do an event this past Saturday. I was so excited to be a part and it was something I believed in. I can’t tell you how blessed I was to be a part of this event. The event was hosted by USAA and Military.com . . . called Spousebuzz (http://www.spousebuzzlive.com/) It was an event that provided services and blessed military spouses with rest, relaxation and fun. About 600+ spouses were estimated to attend . . . not all of those showed but there were a lot.
I brought my husband with me since I didn’t know how it would work . . . lunch, breaks, manning the booth, etc. He’s also an awesome organizer (can see http://fiskateers.com/blog/2006/06/23/mr-organization/) Someone even commented on how organized things were and I have to give him all the credit.
The event was awesome and really spoiled the military spouses. They had sessions with keynote (some celebrity) speakers and then ‘break out sessions’ in which the ladies would visit the booths or dine on appetizers and a chocolate fountain or enter to win diamonds. We met some very neat people who worked with USAA and military.com and made some new friends we will stay in touch with. During the breakout sessions our booth was buzzing. There were so many Fiskateers in the making that my husband helped stand outside the booth and give kits away, asking them to contact me regarding instructions on ‘how to’. Thanks Mom and Dad for always being willing to help with kits. I taught several classes. At one point there were so many taking the class that my husband stepped in and taught a class (after hearing me so many times he was able to pass it on). What a dedicated “Fisk-a-hubby” sharing the Fiskars love. He did an awesome job and went beyond the call of duty. I couldn’t have done it without him.
I had husband and wife teams make the mini album. All the ladies were so sweet and very appreciative. USAA took some film footage and I’d show you photos but once again it’s been busy and I’ve misplaced my camera. Like I said, we met some wonderful people and during a quieter time I even had some one on one time with some ladies. They shared their stories . . . stories of sacrifice and sadness but also stories of courage and love. The sacrificies that they make . . . wow.
Wonderful staff, wonderful event that served the military and their families. I was so happy to be a part. I appreciate the opportunity.
I am so appreciative for the sacrifice that our military and their families make. I am so grateful and can’t thank our servicemen, women and their families enough. I don’t take lightly the freedoms I have and the cost that they’ve come by. Thank you for your sacrifice.
Saturday is Armed Forces Day so a special thanks that day and always for your sacrifice servicemen and women.
God bless the USA . . .
Since I’ll be sending some instructions to several ladies on the mini album I thought I’d also give away a make and take album class for you and ten of your friends (I have it on cd but we are having a few technical difficulties so I’ll be sending an informative email with photos). You’ll win the class kits, some Raindots and a drill. Just post here and I’ll pick a winner in a few days (after our guest blogger post . . . have you been to the message board and guessed who that might be? There’s a giveaway). Here’s a few photos of the mini album . . .

May 16th, 2007 at 1:07 amThanks for sharing! That is so cool what you get to do. Make a difference in people’s lives and also get to meet them! Our servicemen are definitely are very special! We should all be so thankful and proud for what they do for us… the ultimate sacrifice is their life! Awesome! May the Lord continue to protect each one and may He continue to give strength and encouragement to each family who has someone they love overseas.
Merlene says:
May 16th, 2007 at 1:12 amWhat a wonderful opportunity for the Military spouses. They are indeed, the strength behind those who serve. Their sacrifices are equally as important. I admit it I am a “flag waver” and proud to be an American. THANK YOU to all of you who protect our freedoms! Great job Cheryl!!

May 16th, 2007 at 1:25 amWow sounds like you had a great time. I also think it is very important to show our support for our military men and woman. I meet with a group of ladies every month. I would love to be able to do this as a class for them. I don’t have the drill yet either. Ü
Gilda says:
May 16th, 2007 at 1:34 amThat event sounded like it was so much fun. I wish you could have one here in our base in California.
I am a military spouse and my husband is currently deployed overseas for 4 months. He left 2 weeks ago and I just got the news that they are deploying him again in a couple of weeks to a location he can’t disclose even to me. I’m so bummed because I’m just so worried. My 2 kids (ages 6 and 2) are having a pretty hard time too. He will be missing our daughter’s 3rd birthday (this will be the second one he would miss), my birthday, he just missed mother’s day and will be missing father’s day too.
Now I’m not mentioning this for pity but since we are talking about sacrifices, I just wanted to remind others to cherish their precious time spent with their loved ones. Sometimes, some people don’t know how luck they are just having their loved ones by their side.
Suzanne says:
May 16th, 2007 at 1:37 amWhat a wonderful event that must have been. As a former military wife myself (my husband used to be in the Navy) I just know how appreciated it all must have been by all those military spouses!
The album is beautiful. I’ll be crossing my fingers that I get picked!
Paula says:
May 16th, 2007 at 1:38 amWhat a totally wonderful thing for you to be involved in. No matter where we live, our men and women sacrifice so much to enable us to have the freedom we enjoy and sometimes take for granted. Just a couple of weekends ago we celebrated ANZAC day here in Aus. - It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. It’s such an emotional and proud day when we honour those that served and lost their lives for us all.
Thankyou for the opportunity to win your make ‘n’ take class. I know my fortnightly scrappers would love to do a project like this given the opportunity.

May 16th, 2007 at 5:59 amThanks so much for sharing this wonderful event with us. What a great fisk-a-hubby you have to step in and support you. He is definately a keep. The mini book is adorable and would definately be a great class for some lucky winner & her friends.
I am Canadian, and my father and his brother both served in WW11, plus their uncle was killed in action in France at the age of 18 in WW1. My father never spoke of the war and I know that it was very tramatic for him. Last year I requested his military records so that I can do a memorial album of some sort of this time in his life so that my sister, brothers & I are able to know this part of him. He passed away when I was 11.
These men, women and their families definately make a huge sacrifice for us and I for one am extremely thankful.

We were supposed to be getting out in October but we are being extended for another 15 month deployment. But hopefully (knock on wood) things can start going well and maybe he can get out sooner.
Thanks for sharing!

May 16th, 2007 at 8:38 amcute alblum. One of my good scrapbook buddies is an airforce wife. She has moved all over the country to help him serve. He is always in Irac. He will serve abroad for 9 months then come home for a few. He has spent at least 3 of the last 4 years away from his family. I don’t know how she does it. She is pregnant with their 5th child. He was gone when they found out she was pregnant and they hope he will make it back for the birth. The good thing is this is the electronic age and the are able to email constantly. She says in many ways they have a strnger relationship because they talk all the time.

May 16th, 2007 at 8:58 amThanks for sharing your story about the weekend. Please put me in the drawing for this kit. Hubby and I are have been back together for a year after his 14 month deployment with the Army. We always knew it was a possibility since he was ROTC in college, but it came much later than we thought. Thanks for sharing and thanks for giving back to the spouses. They have the hardest job of anyone - especially in this day. The community forgets the sacrifice that they go through each time a loved one leaves for overseas.
Tammy says:
May 16th, 2007 at 9:21 amFirst let me start by saying GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS!!!!!!!!!!!!
I too am a proud American. I am so thankful for what the troops are doing to protect our land and families. I am also thankful to the families who have to make the sacrifice. I have never been faced with having to let one of my family members go for a war or tour of duty. But I will say this, They are very BRAVE because I am not sure that i could do it. May God keep all who are there safe and protected. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!!!!!
Patti Smith says:
May 16th, 2007 at 9:29 amWow what a nice thing to do. I don’t think our military ever gets the appreciation it deserves. What an awesome weekend. I love the mini albumn I can’t wait to do one….
Sandy says:
May 16th, 2007 at 9:31 amfirst off, thanks to your DH for his willingness to serve our wonderful country so my family can be free.
One of the hardest times for my dh was when he got hurt at work and had to have all his toes on his right foot amputated. He had been in the National Guard but had gotten out but was considering reenlisting. When he had his accident, he no longer was able to. that was hard on him.
I always get weepy when I hear our National Anthem being played and it always reminds me to be thankful I live in America and not some other country where we wouldn’t have the freedom we do here. I thank God for those like your husband everyday.
Secondly…what a great minibook! I love the idea of the husbands and wives doing it together.

Thank you for sharing about your life and this special day. I can relate with the worry of having a spouse in the Marines. My DH is a Marine (retired now). He too was called in for Desert Storm. He had to leave our DD and me for a long time. We spupported him and all the military people.
I love the fact that your hubby supports you in your craft. Mine does too and that make all the difference in the world. My family does know that true meaning of sacrifice - in 2003 my children and me were hit by a car while standing on the sidewalk waiting for my youngest daughter to get off the school bus. I thought I had pushed them both out of the way. When my Oldest Daughter realized I didn’t push hard enough and that her 3yr.old brother was in the direct path of the car and would be killed upon impact she jump in front of him and pushed him out of the way. She in turn saved him but, became trapped under the car and dragged for about a half of a mile. I was hit just before her and went soaring into the air and knocked out. When I came through I found my children scatterd. I don’t know how i did it but, I stood up and ran to my son checked on him. Then ran to my daughter (all along falling onto the ground) to help her. She thank GOD was still alive and had minor injuries.
She scarificed herself to save her brother. I scarifice to help them both.
Ok — I shared more than I thought I would so please forgive me sor that.
On a lighter note. The album is beautiful.

May 17th, 2007 at 2:37 amI would love to do a group class with my friends.
I was just yesterday putting together a make-n-take to give out to my scrapping group, and then today I was too sick to go. (Deg. Disk Disease) and was so sad. I hate the days the pain is so bad I can’t get out of bed til the sun is going down. So, I guess I’ll just put the kits away till next month. It’d be nice to show up with this one too, though as an apology for cancelling tonight’s make and take!

May 17th, 2007 at 5:40 pmI appreciate the work you did for the wives! I love our country and respect those who sacrifice for our freedom. If I won the kit I would share with my scrapping gals at church. They make cards for those on our prayer list and we made prayer journals for all the mothers for mother’s day!

May 17th, 2007 at 6:59 pmWow! What an inspirational story! It sounds like you really enjoyed yourself (and your hubby too)! I have a group of ladies who come over once a month for a night out, and this would be a no-brainer for me!!

May 18th, 2007 at 10:01 amYou are really an inspiration. I believe that volunteering always ends up giving you more back than the effort that is put out. Keep up the good work!

May 18th, 2007 at 3:43 pmLove what you did…. I am sure the military wifes had a great day! your mini book is super cute too. I would love to get together with 10 Fiskateers that live near me and have a fun Fiskateer party. I don’t know anyone that scraps, but I bet if I bloged for 9 Fiskateers in the area… I would get plenty of response…and I have the perfect house for a get together. Crossing fingers. And thanks to you, brains on fire, USAA, military.com and Fiskars for making 600+ peoples day! God Bless America and all those in the military & services!!!!

May 21st, 2007 at 3:41 pmWhat a great event! And your husband is so supportive too. That is the icing on the cake. I would love to win this, but not necessarily for me, I would hold the class downtown at our local scrapbooking store. The previous storeowners unfortunately had problem after problem and eventually lost the business. The store was bought by a woman that moved in from out of state. She is hoping to build the reputation of the store back up and get it back up and running profitably again. She seems so positive and believes that she can do it even though the economy in Michigan is very poor. I would love to do this for her if I won. I think it would really help her with the re-opening of the store.

May 21st, 2007 at 4:17 pmAny thing we can do to support our troops and their families is a great thing. Good Job. My dad was in the army for 28 years. There were definetly sacrifices like my Dad missing my high school graduation, but the reward were greater. Like living in europe for 6 years. Thanks for supporting these families, Cheryl. kim
